African Americans Seen Through the Eyes of the Newsreel Cameraman: An Exhibition of films from the Fox Movietone News Collection

Moving Image Research Collections

Fox News and Fox Movietone News camera crews covered the people and events of the country and, indeed, the world. From 1919 to 1963 these journalists aimed their viewfinders at the mundane and the spectacular.

The resulting images—most of which still exist as camera negatives at Moving Image Research Collections—provide an unparalleled opportunity to glimpse the world through their eyes.

“African Americans Seen Through the Eyes of the Newsreel Cameraman” was first mounted as a DVD exhibit during the month of February 2005 in the Thomas Cooper Library to celebrate African American history month.

This web exhibit presents each segment of that original exhibit as its own video. Although limited in length by the format of the original exhibit, this web exhibit provides a telling sample of the many hours of content featuring African Americans in the Fox Movietone News Collection.
